Grapefruit Seed Extract
Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is made from grapefruit seed and pulp. The manufacturing process converts grapefruit bioflavonoids (polyphenolic) into an extremely potent, nontoxic compound that has proven highly effective in numerous applications. It was researched and identified by Jacob Harish, a physicist and immunologist, who became curious about the bitterness of grapefruit seeds. With the assistance of the Plant Pathology Department of the University of Florida, Gainesville, the potential for its use as an antimicrobial agent became clear, and serious testing was undertaken.
GSE has been shown to exert significant antibiotic effects in test tube studies. It can be taken to combat strep, staph, salmonella, E.Coli, candida, herpes, influenza, parasites, fungi, and more.
GSE has been shown to be 10 to 100 times more effective as a disinfectant than chlorine, colloidal silver, and iodine. A study in Brazil found it to be 100% effective (at 100 ppm) for skin disinfection when used as a pre-surgical prep compared to an effectiveness rate of 72% for alcohol and 98% for commercially available surgical soap. It can be used to prevent molds from forming on sprouts by mixing it in the soak and rinse water of the seeds to be sprouted. For skin fungi or bacterial diseases of the skin, mix 15 or more drops of GSE liquid extract in a quart of water, and spray on the infected area. This same dilution can be used as a general antiseptic spray for any contact areas like toilets, sinks, door knobs, bird cages, dog houses, kitchens, etc. It can be mixed into any topical preparation, like shampoo, flea-dip, cat litter, bedding, etc. It is effective in rinse water for washing fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, laundry, and water treatment. Hospitals add GSE to their carpet shampoo machines. Ten to forty drops in one gallon in the reservoir is effective to kill staph, strep, aspergillus, salmonella and many other pathogenic organisms present in carpets and rugs. It is user friendly and environmentally safe when added to solutions to clean fungus and mildew in swimming pools, hot tubs, bathrooms, and birdbaths. In the garden, it is used to control aphids, snails, fungus, mildew, and algae. It can replace pool chemicals for disinfection.
GSE has many internal applications.
GSE can be used for oral hygiene, throat gargle, ear rinse, nasal rinse, vaginal rinse, or for gastrointestinal, viral, parasite and yeast infections. GSE has been proven to be safe when taken internally. An adult should not consume more than 1 drop per ten pounds of weight a day diluted in water. If a person weighs 100 pounds, then the suggested maximum amount is ten drops diluted in 10 ounces of water.
Uncle Harry’s GSE is a very stable product. It is 60% grapefruit seed extract and 40 % vegetable glycerin. It should never be used full strength. Dilute always in water. The following chart will give you correct dilutions for specific uses.
Internal uses:
Oral consumption - A general rule is one drop per ten pounds of body weight. One drop GSE can be diluted in one ounce of water for internal consumption.
Dental rinse - For healthy gums and fresh breath, stir one drop in two ounces of water. Vigorously swish increments of this solution for up to one minute a time.
Throat gargle - Stir one drop into three ounces of water and gargle.
Ear rinse - Mix one drop in one ounce of vegetable glycerin. Apply one drop of this mixture in the affected ear.
Nasal rinse - Mix one drop in six ounces of water. Use a small amount of this solution to sniff up into the nostrils. Hold head back so that the solution goes through the nostril and nasal passages into the back of the throat. Drain the nasal passages.
Vaginal rinse - Mix one drop in 8 ounces of water. Douche once daily.
External Uses:
Facial cleaner - Mix two drops in one ounce of water. Apply this mixture on the face as a face wash.
First-aid skin rinse - Dilute one to three drops in a tablespoon of water or fifteen drops in an ounce of water. Apply this mixture twice daily to the affected area of skin.
Nail treatment - Dilute one to three drops in one tablespoon of water or twenty drops in an ounce of water and apply on surface of nail and cuticle twice daily. Continue as long as needed.
Scalp treatment - Add sixteen drops into an 8 ounce bottle of shampoo. Shake vigorously. Alternately, every time you shampoo put four drops on your hand and massage into scalp and shampoo off.
Pets and Livestock - Add to all pet products for enhanced action according to dilutions given above. Make a pet spray by adding 16 drops to 16 ounces of water and spray.
Household and General Use:
All Purpose cleaner - Add fifteen to thirty drops to any thirty two ounce pump sprayer filled with water or your favorite cleanser. Use on all surfaces around the home.
Vegetable/Fruit wash - For sink wash, add twenty or more drops to a sink full of cold water, and briefly soak vegetables, fruits. For spray washing, add ten or more drops to a thirty two ounce pump sprayer filled with water. Can be used for cut flowers .
Cutting board cleaner - Apply five to ten drops to a cutting board and work in with a damp sponge or dish cloth. Let stand thirty minutes. Rinse.
Cleaning additive - Add ten to twenty drops to sink dishwashing water or to final rinse. Add twenty to forty drops per load of laundry in automatic clothes washing machine, wash or rinse cycle. Add to rug or floor cleaning solutions, ten to forty drops per gallon.
Water treatment - For emergency use or for long-term storage, add five to fifteen drops per gallon, depending on water quality and storage time.
Agriculture/Dairy - Add to livestock feed or water, add to fertilizers, spray on foliage and feed crops.
Cosmetics/Soap making - To improve shelf life, add 0.05% or up to 1% in solution.
GSE is generally used as a food and water preservatives, an additive to countless cosmetic preparations, as a disinfectant in the Food Industry, Cleaning and Custodial, Veterinary Practice, and most importantly, as a human therapeutic.
